The Mixtape Industry

Bizarre_audio_tape_1In today’s music industry many artists in the rap/hip hop genre are using mixtapes as a way of being heard by fans and record companies. These products contain a compilation of the artists work. Some producers even use this as a way for their musical production to be heard. One of the first of today’s popular artists to use this format is 50 Cent. He used them as a way for his fans to be heard and eventually signed a $1 million deal with Shady Records, which is Eminem’s label. When he released his first retail album, it sold over 8 million copies. One of the reasons it sold so many copies is because he created a buzz about his music by distributing about 5 freestyle works with his group G-Unit. His music was on many other releases put together by popular DJ’s such as DJ Whoo Kid, DJ Kayslay, DJ Clue and others. He would also guest host these projects because at the time people wanted to hear anything and everything dealing with 50 Cent.

Another one of today’s popular artists that got his start from these underground releases is Machine Gun Kelly. Before signing with Bad Boy records, he also distributed these musical efforts. Some of today’s popular artist also use this outlet to keep relevant with their fans and continue the buzz. These artists include Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy, Meek Mills, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne and the list goes on. It’s almost mandatory by record labels for artists to constantly release music to keep their fans interested.

Many of today’s popular artists release these projects to keep relevant with their fans. These releases help to keep their buzz going so fans don’t forget about them and also to let them know they still have what it takes to be a music artist. Some of these include Gucci Mane, Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Lloyd Banks and many many others. Too many to list. If you have ever heard of a track from your favorite artist but are not able to find it on their retail album, you can most likely find it on one of these music compilations or one of their official project releases.

Some artists also release music through these products to see what kind of buzz their music is receiving. Sometimes this will also determine their next single that will be released to retail outlets or to be played on the radio. This can help the record company save a big amount of cash determining which song is the best to be released and not release a song that will just become a flop.

We’re going to review Cam’ron’s latest mixtape official release titled ‘Ghetto Heaven’.

The song ‘Me Killa’ is taken from a classic track by Bone Thugs~n~Harmony that goes by the same name.

On ‘Told You Wrong,’ he uses a quick flow,  that works great over J Money’s production on the tracks that sounds like a TV crime drama beat.  Even though Cam’ron has quick flows and punchlines on this song, he doesn’t really impress as it just seems like a filler track.

Some of the other producers on this mixtape include ADM, YH Zombies, Skitzo and even Cam’ron himself produces a couple tracks. Features on this mixtape include 2 Chainz, Yo Gotti, Loaded Lux, and T.I. who always delivers.

Cam’Ron still sounds best on smooth beats with somewhat of a pimp flow.   He speaks, rhymes, and articulate flow is one of the best.  This man has been in the rap game since the 90’s and is still droppin hits like Jay-Z.  Most rappers do not have this type of longevity.

Another example is on the song ‘You Know This,’ where producer Araab Muzik takes a lush harp sound that really brings out the rapper’s story about a persistent girl he’s dealing with.

This tape almost sounds like there are too many different producers which don’t allow the mixtape to have some sort of theme.  Certain part of the tape can become boring or only seem like filler tracks.  Maybe next time only have a few different producers rather as many as he had on this release.

This isn’t the case with the entire mixtape, Cam’Ron always has a few jams that on his releases that you can sit back and get faded too.

Overall you will like this drop as Cam’ron gives you tracks about pimpin, Harlem life, money, drugs, and women.  What else is needed from the Harlem breed rap artist?  Maybe a dipset reunion or at least a release with fellow rapper Juelz Santana.

It seems as though Mayback Music Group’s success has slowed although Rick Ross who was never faded by 50 Cent’s tirade of diss records still continued to produce hit.  Although, today he hasn’t continued to produce as many hits as he once did.

One of MMG’s last relevant releases to drop was Meek Mill’s mixtape release of ‘Dreamchasers 2’.  The Philadelphia rapper made a name for himself with hit records like ‘I’m a Boss’ the year prior.  He also had a few hits that showed he has what it takes to be a great rapper.  Eventually Meek Mill lost the spotlight with other new to the scene rappers break hits such as today’s more popular, Kendrick Lamar.

With this mixtape release, Meek Mill doesn’t change any type of style he is giving you.  He still comes with the heart-pounding, hard-hitting rap style of his previous official mixtape release.  Meek Mill is back again to prove he has what it takes to signed to a major record label and keep his fans wanting more.

Meek Mill also has some of rap’s more popular music artists featured on ‘Dreamchasers 3′.  Artists include Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, and Fabolous.  Production  on the mixtape from Key Wane ‘All Me’ and Boi-1da ‘FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt’.

The music artists that are featured on this mixtape bring just as much lyricism as Meek Mill does delivering some of the best rhymes a feature could produce.  Some of the tracks sound dark and erie, but it is fitting for Meek Mill’s style of rap.  The producers laid down some hot samples for just a mixtape.

Meek Mill has some club ready tracks and rap about the usual guns, money, violence, drugs, and women.  This style of rap has become very repetitive in the rap music industry.  Why not rap about being a baller player or a boxer instead of a drug dealer or murderer.

One special feature on this mixtape is from the late rap artist, Lil Snupe.  On the track it pays tribute to Lil Snupe and his unique hip hop rhyme skills.

The one thing wrong about this mixtape is that it is far too lengthy.  It can be hard to listen to a rapper for a long period of time.  Meek Mill is giving you more than a full length album or mixtape, he is giving you a ‘War and Peace’ novel of mixtapes.  It seems like his aim is to get you so hype that by the time you are done listening to this mixtape, if you can actually sit and listen to it that long, you’re ready to pop bottles and hit the club.

This mixtape had much hype up to it’s release, weather Meek Mill delivered or not is up to you the listener.

This is not an official release by Eminem, but then again, when has there ever been an official mixtape release solely by Eminem?  The closest would be with Slaughterhouse and the ‘On The House’ mixtape @ http://www.buymixtapes.com/Slaughterhouse-On-The-House.12003.mixtape.  This is a compilation of Eminem tracks consisting of freestyles, popular hit records, and live performances.
