G-Unit Reunion

G Unit Radio 2K14

There is much to talk about with the reunion of hip hop group, G-Unit, at this years summer jam in New York City.  The four members returning are 50 Cent, Tony Yayo, Lloyd Banks, and Young Buck.  It seems The Game was not invited to the reunion, but that’s ok because he left on his own back in 04-05.  Why invite him back anyways, he seemed too bullheaded and would just cause more problems than help with their success.  This mixtape is not an official release, as many hip hop fans are eagerly awaiting for.  Until then, have a look at this release with titles such as ‘Hated On Jesus’, ‘Ordinary’, ‘0 to 100 Freestyle’, ‘Nah I’m Talking Bout’, and also a few solo tracks by each of the G-Unit crew.

The Value of Mixtapes

download the best mixtapes
the many benefits of mixtapes

If you have ever gone to the store to purchase your favorite music artist’s latest retail album release only to find out that you like about 3-4 songs on the entire project, you will be very disappointed. You would feel that not only did you waste your hard earned money on buying it, but also any gas money or bus fare you used to get to the store. Here is something that will help you save your hard earned money and spend it on something worth it, mixtapes! The compilations are put together by professional DJs and they only release the newest and hottest music. Most of the time, these musical projects are free to download in today’s digital age of music. Everyone knows what an MP3 is and most, if not all of these products can be downloaded in that format.

The best thing about these compilations are the DJs. They release compilations containing some of the best music available. These DJs are able to get their hands on music first as many of them work directly with the music artists or with the record labels. Many record companies will use mixtapes to release a few tracks of their recording artists to the public with little to no cost. This helps them to determine which will be the best track to release to the public as a single. They can also use this to gauge what type of feedback they are receiving about certain artists.

DJs release various types of projects to the public. The different genres are hip hop, r&b, party, reggae, blend, southern, and others. Any one of these will help set the mood for any situation. Most contain music from many different artists, so you will almost never get tired of hearing the same type of music. These DJs pick out the best tracks from many artists, so you will not be disappointed in purchasing an album that has only 3-4 tracks that you like. Some of these drops are actually better than an artist’s retail album. Since most of these releases are free, you have nothing to lose! At most, maybe a small amount of listening time or memory on your mp3 listening device.

There are many places you can find mixtapes, but the best place is the internet. Most websites offer them for free download, but be careful which website you go to as most of these will load your computer with unwanted ads. This is how they make money, by showing you ads that you have no interest in. There are a few mixtape websites that do not cram your computer screen with ads. These are the best websites to download from.

Mixtapes and How They First Began

internet mixtape, download mixtapes, music compilation
How the internet made mixtapes popular

One thing that has made music very popular today is the internet. If the internet was not around, would these music compilations be as popular as they are now? Would they be as easy to find as they are on the internet? DJs first released their music compilations of unreleased music or soon to be released music from popular music industry artists on cassette tapes. Mixtapes became very popular in the 90’s. One of the best DJs of that mixtape era was DJ Clue. In the 90’s, these compilations were typically released on cassette tapes. Most, if not all originated in New York City, where hip hop was very popular. Due to the popularity of these compilations in New York City, it became known as the ‘Mecca’. In order to obtain one of these mixtape gems, one would have to travel to New York City to purchase a copy. Mass distribution came about when local mom and pop shops would buy them in bulk at wholesale prices and sell them under the table. These compilations in the 1990 were still scarce because not many businesses knew how to obtain wholesale. Because of this, bootleg copies were very common as it was the easiest method to obtain these gems. Bootleg copies are when someone has a real copy or master copy of the DJ’s mixtape compilation and then dubs their own copies to sell or give away. Many people would not to travel to New York all the time just to buy these products since they were released very frequently. This would be very time consuming for anyone that did not live close to New York. The easiest way was to know someone that could make you a copy of the one they had.

Mixtapes became very popular on the internet at the beginning of the turn of the century, right around 2002. It was very easy to go on a website and place an order for these products because the turn around time was very quick. You would have them in your mailbox within the week. This method allowed for worldwide distribution. Many people liked the ease of going on an internet site to pick out which songs they wanted to purchase. This method is still used today to distribute hard copies. Eventually everyone caught on and the next step was digital downloads. This is the quickest way as you can download the mixtape in mp3 format within minutes depending on your internet connection speed. There are many many websites that allow you to download mp3s for free in mp3 format, although many of these sites display ads that can ruin your mixtape downloading experience. Some of these ads can contain malware that will infect your computer and steal your personal information without you knowing it. There are very few sites that offer ad free downloading. The sites that offer ad free downloads are the best.

Mixtapes and Their Recent Popularity

When these compilations became very popular in the late 1990’s and 2000’s there were not as many DJs as there are today.  A few of the top DJs were DJ Clue, DJ Kay Slay, DJ Envy, and DJ Whoo Kid. Nowadays it is hard to find a release from these DJs.  Although out of all of them, you are still likely to find a DJ Whoo Kid mixtape release.  DJ Envy now hosts a morning radio show with Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God.  DJ Kay Slay releases maybe 2-3 mixtapes a year at most.  The last release by DJ Clue was in 2009 and for a short time he was a VJ host on MTV.  In today’s world of music, the market is heavily saturated with compilations containing much of the same music being released at the time.  Back in the DJ Clue and DJ Kay Slay days, many did not contain the same music at all.  The DJs would also have problems with each other if one of them released a track that the other had already released.  Today, it is very commonplace to find many of the products with the same tracks.  Back when DJ Clue and DJ Envy were releasing projects, they only released about 1 every 1-2 months.  People could not wait for these DJs to release a mixtape and when they did, people did whatever they could to get the exclusive release.  Today, DJs release drops every 1-2 weeks and most of these are overlooked because there are just so many products being released that it’s not such a hot product anymore.  With today’s technology it is very easy to find music on the internet and put together a mixtape.  Back in the day, the popular DJs that were releasing exclusive music had an inside connection with record labels.

When DJ Clue was releasing drops, most of the tracks had well-known established artists with maybe 1 or 2 unsigned artists.  Today is the opposite, these compilations are filled with unsigned artists and have only a few tracks by popular music artists.  In the past, DJs would frequently give shout outs over the most popular or unheard tracks.  This kept other DJs from stealing their music and claiming to have it first.  Shout outs are still common today, but not nearly as frequent as they once were.  They used to hold an event in New York City every year similar to the Grammies, but for mixtapes.  This event was called ‘Justo’s Mixtape Awards’, but that event no longer takes place.  One reason the event may not take place anymore is because the awards show would end very early with mixtape DJs backstage fighting with each other.  It may have become too dangerous to hold the award show and was ended before someone was fatally hurt.  Another awards show is the SEA which stands for ‘Southern Entertainment Awards’.  Information about this awards show can be found online by searching Google.
